Administrative Campus Fire Safety Plan

This Fire Safety Plan governs the physical campus of Am-Can Business & Tech School at Unit B, 99 Sante Drive, Vaughan, Ontario. It applies to administration, teachers, students attending the campus for supervised on-site study, and visitors.

Course delivery is not affected by a campus evacuation. Every course is delivered online and asynchronously, and is hosted off site, so a student studying remotely is unaffected and a student who normally attends the campus can continue the same course from anywhere.

2. Responsibilities

Under the Ontario Fire Code, responsibility for safe evacuation is shared between administration and teaching staff.

The Principal, as Chief Fire Warden

  • Maintains the approved status of all physical fire safety systems.
  • Conducts and logs the required fire drills.
  • Meets Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service on arrival and gives a status report on the evacuation and building access.
  • Keeps the Fire Logbook in the main office and records every inspection, test and drill in it.

Teachers and supervising staff

  • Know the primary and secondary evacuation routes from every room in use.
  • Direct the immediate, orderly evacuation of everyone on site when the alarm sounds.
  • Take the campus sign in register outside to the assembly area and account for every person recorded on it.
  • Confirm that no one is left behind in a study room, a break out room or a washroom.

3. Accounting for people on site

The campus sign in register

Every person who enters the campus, whether student, member of staff, contractor or visitor, signs in on arrival and signs out on departure. The register is held at the main office and is taken to the assembly area in an evacuation, so that everyone can be accounted for.

This register is a safety record only. It is not attendance for academic purposes. Attendance at this school is measured by completion of the weekly milestones, and physical presence at the campus is never marked. See the Attendance and Intake Policy.

  3. Leave the building by the nearest designated exit route.
  4. Assemble at the designated outdoor assembly area, at the far end of the parking lot, clear of fire hydrants and emergency vehicle access routes.

6. Hazard control

  • Equipment. Computers and other electrical equipment in the classrooms and the computer room are powered down at the end of each day the campus is in use. The school does not operate a science laboratory and holds no laboratory chemicals.
  • Combustible materials. Paper stock and other combustible supplies are stored in approved cabinets and are not stored in corridors.
  • Egress routes. Hallways, exit doors and the paths to fire extinguishers are kept clear of desks, surplus furniture and equipment at all times.
  • Student records. Paper Ontario Student Record folders are held in closed metal filing cabinets in the main office. In an evacuation staff prioritise people and evacuate immediately, leaving the cabinets to protect the records.
